NY State and NY City Pay
Record Medicaid Settlement
New York State and City have agreed to pay $540 million to settle a false claims case in which the state and city were accused of improperly billing Medicaid for student speech, physical and occupational therapy, psychological counseling and transportation costs. Excluded Doc Bills Millions
Six individuals and seven companies have been indicted in a scheme that defrauded Medicaid out of $47 million over 10 years. All of the companies and individuals are affiliated with Alexander Levy, who was excluded from participation in the New York Medicaid program in 1997 for submitting false claim. >> To read more

Spinal Fraud on National Scale
Robert Trusiak, chief of the affirmative civil enforcement unit at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York, reports that the Department of Justice is investigating hospitals around the country to determine whether their Medicare claims for kyphoplasty were improper when billed as an inpatient procedure instead of an outpatient service.>> To read more
Florida Doctor Pays $1.7 Million
Dr. Gabriel DeCandido of Largo, Florida, has agreed to pay $1.7 million to settle allegations he defrauded Medicare by upcoding for services performed. Because Dr. DeCandido attempted to hide and transfer his assets to avoid having to pay a judgment to the U.S., the court permitted the government to seize five of his vehicles and garnish $976,000 he had transferred to his wife. >> To read more
Foreign Banks Kick Out
U.S. Tax Cheats
Credit Suisse, HSBC, and several others foreign banks have recently notified their American clients that they must close their offshore accounts or transfer them to their institution's U.S.-based operations.
