Pfizer Reserves $2.3 Billion
Pfizer's recent SEC report notes the company has reserved $2.3 billion "
resulting from an agreement in principle to resolve previously disclosed investigations regarding allegations of past off-label promotional practices concerning Bextra, as well as other open investigations."  When a settlement occurs, this will make Bextra the largest single settlement with an FCA component, dwarfing Eli Lilly's $1.4 billion settlement announced just last week.  >> To read more
    

Investing in Fraud Busting
The Supplemental Anti-Fraud Enforcement Markets Act, introduced by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), would allocate an additional $110 million a year to hire 500 new FBI agents, 50 new assistant U.S. Attorneys and 100 new SEC enforcement division employees to fight white collar fraud.  The senators note that the $110 million investment will pay for itself, since fines and restitution can be expected to exceed $110 million.  >> To read more


Tony West to Head DoJ Civil

Oakland attorney and former federal prosecutor Tony West has been tapped to head the Civil Division at the U.S. Department of Justice.  West was previously a top aide to Attorney General Janet Reno. >> To read more

Top Purdue Pharma Executives Banned for 15 Years
An Administrative Law Judge has affirmed a 15-year exclusion from all Federal health care programs against Purdue Frederick's Michael Friedman (former COO and CEO), Paul Goldenheim, M.D. (Chief Scientific Officer) and Howard Udell (General Counsel) for their roles as responsible corporate officers who failed to prevent misbranding and fraudulent distribution of OxyContin. >> To read more
