House Judiciary Moves on FCA
A
joint hearing of two House Judiciary Subcommittees was held on H.R. 4854, the "False Claims Act Correction Act."  Testimony was heard from relator Albert Campbell as well as lawyers Shelley Slade (formerly with DoJ), James Helmer, and Peter Hutt.  >> To read the testimony or watch the video
   


No Way to Run a Country
In January 2007, the Army awarded a $298 million munitions contract to a company called AEY run by 21-year old
Efraim E. Diveroli.  Diveroli filled the Pentagon's order with 40-year old Chinese-made ammunition repackaged in Albania.  Diveroli has now been indicted for fraud, and Thomas Franks of The Wall Street Journal wonders "How could a kid barely able to buy beer secure a nearly $300 million defense contract? It will be interesting to find out. Maybe Mr. Diveroli's story will be the one that finally fixes public attention on the carnival of fraud, waste and profiteering that characterizes our system of government-by-contractor." >> To read more


Foreign Assistance Fraud

Congressional auditors looking at assistance to Pakistan conclude that
the Pentagon paid $20 million for road construction and $15 million for bunker construction that never occurred.  In addition, Pakistan's government billed the U.S. $200 million for an air defense radar system that was not part of the war on terror.  >> To read more

Pharma Cash on the Hill

The pharmaceutical industry's spending on lobbying skyrocketed in 2007 according to a report by the Center for Public Integrity which calculates that drug companies spent $168 million on lobbying last year, up 32% from 2006.  >>
