Biovail
To Pay $25 Million
Biovail Corporation says it will pay $25 million to settle
criminal allegations related to kickbacks paid to
doctors in order to induce them to prescribe
Cardizem.
The probe began after reports
in The Wall Street Journal and Barron's revealed Biovail was
paying doctors up to $1,000 each to write prescriptions for Cardizem LA and
write reports on the drug -- a kind of Phase IV marketing scam. >>

Lockheed Martin Space Systems has agreed to pay $10.5 million to settle a
case alleging the company submitted false invoices in
order to receive early progress payments. The fraud is connected to a multi-billion dollar contract

Baptist
Health South
to Pay $7.675 Million
Baptists Health South has agreed to pay $7.65 million to settle claims it
violated the False Claims Act and the Stark Statute by making excessive
payments to an oncology group that was a source of patient referrals to two
of its hospitals. >>

Zimmer
to Pay Docs to Get
Out of Kickback Scheme
Earlier this year, Zimmer paid
$169.5 million to settle False Claims Act
charges that the company was paying kickbacks to doctors and
hospitals in order to get them to implant their
orthopedic devices. Now
Zimmer is poised to pay an additional $250 million or so in
order to get out of long-term kickback/referral contracts
it signed
with hundreds of surgeons across the U.S. as part of the
institutionalization of the kickback scam. Since Zimmer was
one of only five companies nailed for
orthopedic kickbacks, look for
other companies to perhaps follow suit.
